When I saw the cushions from SOFA AFFAIRS I could not stop touching them. The fabrics, the ranges of colours: I could immediately picture them scattered on my sofa and having the feeling I live in a luxury hotel.

Katherine, tell us about yourself?

Carattere Collection

My interior design enthusiasm was early in the making! My parents tend to say, I have always had strong views on what I should wear and how my room should be decorated. Then again, any self-respecting teenager would expect a total command of her own wardrobe and a complete independence from the preconceptions of her parents. And, fortunately I had that tolerant Mum, who gave me every opportunity for self-expression. She also involved me in her own decisions on how to refurbish the house; which tiles to take for the hall, what colour material to choose for the sofa etc. But, it took a little while before I made it my profession. After university, I was in marketing for Coca-Cola and adidas. Business, they say, is creative and marketing especially so. Everyone appreciates the creativity in an entertaining TV spot, but also the development of sales material and packaging design is a creative process. And, one that I found very rewarding. The work involves, among other things, an understanding of the psychology of colours and their use in combination... not such a far cry from interior design. The beverage business then took me to the Summer Olympics in Athens, where I met my Italian husband. Together, we worked in Turin for a year on the build-up to the Winter Olympics. By the time we moved back to Switzerland, I was thoroughly imbued with Italian design and craftsmanship.

Stanotte Collection

How did the Sofa Affairs story started ?

I fell in love with a particular fabric - what has now turned out to be our stanotte cushion. It’s pattern is striking, the colours vibrant and the quality is out of this world. It makes a real statement on a sofa. I love design that makes a statement and reflects a bit of your own personality - that is what makes a home unique. An ambition was set in motion: Why not run an online shop for cushions that stand out! When I searched and found the perfect craftsmen to create these cushions - a small family run tapestry in Verona - one thing lead to another.

What keeps you going on a daily basis? What is your main motivation?

First of all, there is something infinitely satisfying about working with aesthetics. I truly believe, good design is a human need. To be dealing with home accessories is a dream come true. Then, after working for large companies, it is a thrill to be creating an entirely own project. SOFA AFFAIRS is a bit like my third child. I enjoy watching it evolve. It is a rollercoaster ride you do not want to get off.

“ Working with people that do their trade with pride is highly inspiring.”

What was it like seeing your first design come to life?

It was exciting, of course. But even more gratifying is the journey to each end product. Narrowing down to the perfect pattern and most appealing colours, defining the complimenting fabrics, the trimmings and all the details is a labour of love. The cushions are the result of a passionate exchange with the craftsmen accompanied by many espresso coffees. Working with people that do their trade with pride is highly inspiring. Now I enjoy seeing, which cushions turn out to be the front runners. Sometimes, I am also welcomed into customers homes and we arrange cushions on their sofa. It is always a thrill, to see how a seemingly minor change in soft furnishings can transform a room. I enjoy sofas coming to life with our cushions!

What is next for SOFA AFFAIRS?

I am currently studying Interior Design to expand our services. At the moment I am running renovation projects on request and collaborate with Italian suppliers far beyond fabrics. I soon hope to offer everything from the design concept to supervising the build for anybody wanting to remodel their home.
